Emily and Michael first met on the sand at Wrightsville Beach on a warm autumn afternoon, so when they started planning their wedding, they knew they wanted water, bricks, and a relaxed coastal feeling to be at the heart of the day. Instead of a long, formal ballroom event, they envisioned a warm, open-air dinner party under the stars in Wilmington's historic downtown.
The Atrium was the perfect spot. Tucked behind old brick facades, the venue feels like a private, secret garden oasis. On a beautiful spring afternoon, they gathered their closest family and friends to share vows, eat family-style wood-fired pizzas, and dance under string lights.
The Personal Details
What made the day so incredibly special were the quiet, personal touches. Emily wore her mother’s restored lace veil, which floated beautifully in the afternoon breeze. Instead of traditional cake-cutting, the couple invited everyone to join them for late-night gelato from a local Wilmington cart—a nod to their first trip to Italy together.
During the toasts, Michael’s brother read a funny, handwritten letter they had found in their childhood bedroom, bringing both laughter and happy tears to the long dinner tables.
How the Day Flowed
a warm, simple look at the natural rhythm of their celebration.
01:30 PM — Quiet Mornings
Getting Ready in the Loft
Emily and her bridesmaids spent the morning getting ready in a sun-filled brick loft downtown. They kept the music soft, drank coffee, and enjoyed a slow, stress-free morning together before stepping into their dresses.
03:30 PM — First Moments
The Private Meet-up under the Oak
Before the guests arrived, Emily and Michael met up for a private first look under a large oak tree just down the street. It gave them a valuable moment to hug, laugh, and focus on each other before the ceremonies began.
05:00 PM — The Vows
The Ivy Courtyard Ceremony
Under the open-sky courtyard of The Atrium, they exchanged simple, handwritten vows in front of seventy of their closest friends. The ceremony was completely unplugged, with guests fully present rather than looking through screens.
06:30 PM — Golden Hour
Portraits Along the Riverfront
As the sun began to set, they slipped away for fifteen minutes to walk along the wooden docks of the Cape Fear River. Photographer Ellen Page captured their first portraits as newlyweds in the soft, glowing evening light.
07:30 PM — The Dinner Party
Candlelit Dinner & Dancing
Long, wooden tables were set up in the courtyard under string lights. Guests enjoyed a family-style meal of local, wood-fired seasonal dishes, followed by heartfelt speeches and endless dancing under the stars.

ELLEN'S PHOTOGRAPHY DIARY
Focus on the feeling, not the posing
"The Atrium is one of my favorite places to photograph because of its natural, soft light. During Emily and Michael's first look, I stood far back with a 35mm film lens, letting them simply exist in the space together without staging them. When you forget about the camera and focus entirely on each other, the most authentic, heirloom-quality memories happen naturally."
